Prize from Inspired to Scrap!

Every once an a while my scrapbooking challenges pay off. Two weeks ago was one of those times. My "Adoption Day" layout was the winner over at Sketchy Thursdays.

My prize was a kit from Inspired to Scrap. I choose the kit called "Storytime," and it included Kit contents: paper, alphas, and phrases from Crate Paper, paper and embellishments from Studio Calico, some Tim Hortz embellishments, and a few other fun things.

As adorable and fun as all the papers, alphas, and embellishments are, I think my favorite thing about the kit was "instructions" that they sent along. Stacy, the owner, created a little guide on how to use four of the papers in four different layouts, with cutting guides, sketches, and pictures. The frugal side of me loves this, because I know I can get the most bang for my buck with these awesome papers!

Adoption Day Layout

I knew as soon as Suzanne gifted me the Echo Park Little Boy collection for my birthday last month, I would be using it for Levi's Adoption Day layout.

When I saw this layout sketch for Sketchy Thursdays, it was time to craft!

I didn't have room anywhere for all the journaling i had to do, so I just printed it out like a letter to Levi to tell him about his special day, and paper clipped it to the back of page two.

Of course, the layout is much straighter in person. All the papers, captions, and letters are from Echo Park, except for "Adoption Day," which is Thickers.

Baby Dedication

I guess one layout a week is better than nothing! This weekend, during Levi's naps, I got this layout finished. It is about Levi's baby dedication. It took me extra long to do because I had so much journaling to squeeze in. I tried out my first journaling envelope. I think I like it!

The layout is based on this sketch from Page Maps via The Paper Variety.

I must say, the best thing I ever did for Levi's baby book is to BLOG whenever things are fresh in my mind, so then I can go back later and just print out the blog and call it journaling! This kid is going to have the most detailed baby book ever!

Camping is In-Tents

The Paper Variety challenge this week to to make something having to do with summer. I usually scrapbook chronologically, and am currently working on Levi's 8 month pictures. Hold the phone - I jumped ahead to the nine month stack to get these camping pictures!

I used Create a Critter and Opposite Attract. The paper is one of the DCWV photo stacks.

Levi LOVES the bathtub. When I was taking these pictures, I knew exactly what this layout would look like and say (am I officially a nerd now?). I used this week's Sketchy Thursday layout, and halfway through assembly realized I qualified for the polka dot challenge at The Paper Variety. Double Challenge Duty!

The tub is from New Arrival and the title is Juice on Sure Cuts A Lot. The adorable chunko kid is mine!

His Royal Cuteness

This layout contains two firsts for me: first time making a "banner" (what's the official name for those things?), first time using "transparency" paper (the crown stuff). I had a little trouble with the transparency paper - what is the best way to utilize this stuff? I feel like it just looks like white paper with black print because I had to put white paper behind it. What's the point, really?

Oh well, anyway, another layout about my baby, Levi! This one is for the Sketchy Thursdays challenge.

I got a little sloppy again on this layout. My problem is that I have the desire to craft or scrap pretty much everyday, but only ever do it during a nap time. Well, today Levi's "Big Nap" ended after 30 minutes, so, what's done is done.

The Paper Variety Challenge this week is a "1-2-3 Recipe Challenge." So mine includes:
1 Monogram or 1 Stamp
2 Journaling Strips or 2 cute babies
3 Colors of Ribbon or 3 kinds of paper or 3 photos

In case you're wondering about my over use of black and white paper, this layout is next to this one in Levi's baby book. Also, my son's nursery is black, white, and red, so it is just kind of his "life theme" at this point. Poor kid. :)

These pictures were from a REALLY fun night!! We have a friend, Erin, who makes mascots and performs for a living. She used to be the mascot, Winger for the Washington Capitals. Herb, Levi, and I, all experienced our first MAJOR LEAGUE hockey game last month. Erin's boys (Matt, Ethan, and Adin) were there too to cheer Erin on as Winger. Levi stayed up far too late and was not fond of the buzzer, but other than that we had a great time.

We had such a good time that I actually broke down and bought these Jolee's Stickers. I know, so cheesy, and I could have made something myself with the cricut. I couldn't help it though, they were 40% off this week at JoAnn's!

Growing in Beauty

This is one of my favorite layouts.
Then again, how could something with such a beautiful subject (my neice, Joelle) turn out bad?
The ScrapFit Workout #39 was to use "glitter and glam." There are many ways to make things sparkle – glitter, embossing, paint, stickles and more! Now for the glam – make this a fun feminine layout, make it soft and fully or bright and blingy!

The paper, diamond stickers, and beauty thickers were my glitter. The glam was everything else!

(Oh, and please note, I "edited" one of the pictures a bit. No one wants naked pictures of their kid online.)

I don't usually scrapbook out of chronological order, but this week I got Levi's 6 month pictures printed and knew I wanted to do this layout right away! I am proud of myself for actually finishing it from beginning to end in the time it took my son to fall asleep from his nap (5:00-5:45 - he was REALLY hyper), and now it's 5:50 and I'm already posting it. Man, pigs are flying around here!

Anyway, the layout is based on his shirt for St. Patrick's Day that says, "Sham-Rockin!" I like to buy him a ridiculously cute and cheesy shirt for each holiday, and when I saw this music one (technically, Jess saw it) I couldn't resist it's $5 price tag. I'm happy to report he's even worn it more than once, which is more than I can say for some of his ridiculously large wardrobe.

I'm also playing along with The Paper Variety's tic-tac-toe challenge.

Can you figure out which way I have tic-tac-toe? I'll give you a clue, there are two ways!! It was a happy accident.

It's Not Easy Being Green

My first scrapbook challenge in a looong time...The challenge this week at The Paper Variety was to create a project using mostly green. I actually did two layouts.

The kitchen paper is from DCWV. "Good Eats" was cut using Sure Cuts A Lot. I used a sketch from Scrapbooks, Etc magazine.

I can't remember where this paper came from, but I love it. The Christmas Ornament paper was a gift from my sister-in-law Sarah for Christmas. How I love when people buy me scrappy things for Christmas. The tree and lights are from "Create A Critter."

As far as scrapbooking goes, I'm really only concentrating on Levi's album right now. I'm doing pretty well. He'll be 7 months old soon, and I working on pictures from when he was 4 and 5 months old! Yay!

GLITTER!

Well, Christmas decorations that is. Jess turned me on to this beautiful wreathe. I loosely followed the tutorial, combines some glittery things from the clearance section at JoAnn's, and ta-da!

It feels a bit Suessical to me, but that's okay, I really like it that way.

I am SOO excited to decorate for Christmas next week - stay tuned!

Charlotte's Wreathe

I've been just dying to do a "book page" craft. I picked up an old dictionary and a ripped up copy of "Charlotte's Web" at school when teachers were cleaning out their closets.

To make this wreathe, I followed two tutorials from Jones Design Company (one of my favorite blogs these days).

As you can see, I altered my book page wreathe a bit. Instead of hot glue, I stapled rolls of pages to my straw wreathe. To cover the staples I used some discount ribbon from big lots (which I did break out the hot glue gun for).

Still A Hoot

For Herb's grandpa's 75th birthday, I created this owl card.

The Paper Variety challenge this week is called "The Sky's the Limit!" Originally, I was going to make a kite on the outside, with a sentiment on the inside to say, "My, oh, my, how the years have flown by."

When my kite wasn't working out too well, I abandoned it for this owl from Create a Critter. The inside of this card says, "You're still a hoot after all these years. Happy 75th!"

Please excuse the mess of my desk top. I really should have put the card on a black or white background for the picture!

Scrappin' Oak Island - Part 2

Scrappin' Oak Island, Part 1

Here's my first installment of our family vacation in July - the family portraits! As soon as I saw this sketch for Sketchy Thursdays, I knew I wanted to create this layout. In hindsight, I should have used the brown ribbon on both sides of the layout. The paper is from a new pack I got called Fashion District by Me & My Big Ideas.

To qualify for the ScrapFit "green" challenge, I up-cycled the white filler paper that comes with page protectors, and touches of green in the layout.

Scenes of Autumn

I was inspired by Jess to write a blog post about a few things I've done to "fall-up" our home!

First, I wanted to fall themed piece of art to hang in the living room. You can read here about how I created the "Give Thanks" art. Secondly, I decided to swap out our fun, busy lampshades for more neutral (read: white) ones (for 2.99 a pop at Ollie's). The lampshade switcheroo led me to move around some cabinets and lamps in the dining/music room, as well. Finally, I pulled all my velvety, fluffy pillows out of my end table storage piece. I hope if you come visit you will think the living room is cozy!

Like that pumpkin? It was the find of the day today at Goodwill!

New arrangement with music cabinet beside couch, which means more room for Herb's guitar gear beside the piano!

Next stop, the kitchen! I picked up that gem of a pumpkin at a yard sale in June for $1.

Give Thanks

I wanted something fall-ish to hang above the couch. Here's what I did.

1. Wrapped a large canvas ($1 yard sale - big hydrangea on it...ugly) in brown satin that I already had using a staple gun.

2. Using the leftover satin, I created several flowers, using this tutorial.

3. Using SCAL, my cricut, black vinyl, a foam brush, and fabric paint, I created a stencil and painted "Give Thanks" onto the satin.

4. Next, I messed around with the placement of the satin flowers.

5. Finally, just as I was finishing up, I blew out the candle used to make the flowers, consequently splashing hot wax on the bottom right hand corner. This caused me the need to make several more flowers (which I should have done in the first place), and create an asymmetrical design.

I want to still add a white stitched border around the edge of the piece.

And bonus! I used the negative vinyl to at a little bit of thanks to our stairwell.

For my mom's third 49th birthday, I wanted to make something special for her sewing room. I used paper from my new Me & My Big Ideas pad, and cut these vintage seamstress silouttes using SCAL.

I am in love with the look of the caged dress form! I found the svg here.

I'm fully aware that my sewing machine is backwards. The only problem is I wasn't fully aware of that until it was already glued down. I hope whenever my mom looks at it, she will be reminded of the "good enough" craftiness I have learned from her over the years! :) I found this svg here.

My friend from church, Sharon, asked me to make something to serve as a daily reminder of one of her favorite Bible verses. Sharon and Fred's youngest daughter has struggled with many health issues, and their story is especially close to our hearts. I hope this piece of "art" can be an encouragement to Sharon on the rough days - God has sure used her to be an encouragement to me!

I picked up the wooden frame at a yard sale for $1 (it is so solid). A little black gloss spray paint goes a long way! The 11x14 canvas came from Big Lots for $3. I printed the verse on Kraft card stock. The flowers are made from some beads and silk I already had, using this tutorial from Jones Design Company (one of my favorite design sites). I liked the look of the burnt edges, so I left them.

Scrappin' My Crappy Days

Unlikely Art

About a year ago I picked up 4 framed pieces of "kitchen art" at Dollar General. They were each $10 with 90%, a.k.a., $1 each!

I had intentions to use the square frames for art in the nursery, which I had not begun yet. As time went on, I found other things to do with the nursery, but I was still left with these perfectly square, classy black frames (with ugly chef cartoons inside of them).

Here's what I did...

1. The first frame broke when I took it apart. So it went in the trash.

2. In the second frame, I put in a piece of tissue paper that my brother found in my dad's storage shed. It is decades old and comes from the growing and packing celery days of my grandfather, Elam Stoltzfus.

3. Sticking with the "heredity" idea, I wanted to frame something from Herb's past. I found this handkerchief from his great-grandmother with and "S" embroidered on it. No, it does not stand of Suereth (or Stoltzfus), but rather Smith. Kinda cool that a lot of our ancestors have S last names!

4. Finally, I had one frame left, and it sat empty for weeks after the Smith and Stoltzfus ancestry hung on the wall in our dining room. On Monday, I was cleaning out our guest room, where I store all my "life memorabilia," which consists of anything from my past I want to keep that won't fit in a scrapbook. I found this little treasure, "Salute To P.M.E.A" for Bass Clarinet. I played it at every single festival I went to for 5 years, which was a big part of my life in high school.

Bathroom - Complete!

This has been a long time coming! Ironically, when we bought our house 3 years ago, the bathroom was one of the few things that we felt didn't really need any work. We liked the neutral tones and light colors. Unforturnately, as time passed, we realized that peel and stick floor tiles are TERRIBLE. Water began leaking into the kitchen if we didn't close the shower curtain all the way because there was no barrier or seal on the floor.

Here is the bathroom when we first looked at the house (before we moved in):

Since then, here is what we have done.

1. Removed above corner cabinet and styrofoam baseboard. Ew! Read about that process here.

2. Painted and gussied up the vanity and medicine cabinet (free paint left over from nursery).

3. Hung white cabinet above the toilet (free cabinet from mom!).

4. Purchased matching silver knobs for vanity, medicine, and over the toilet cabinets (Lowes, $5 for 4).

5. Arranged plant and glass cotton storage above toilet (free, already had).

4. Painted the bathroom door semi-gloss white, along with all the other doors in the house, more on that later (also free, done with leftover paint).

5. Painted the door knob high gloss black (spray paint, $4).

6. Purchase black and white magazine holder (Target, $2).

7. Installed a new toilet paper holder, and put it in a more accessible location (Target, $5).

6. Installed various towel and hair dryer racks (Yard Sales, $2 for all).

7. Purchased Congoleum vinyl sheet flooring remnant (Carpet Mart, $40).

8. Installed new flooring (Flooring Creations, $230).

9. Purchased new rug and shower curtain (Target - on sale!, $20 and Ollies, $5).

Grand Total for minor bathroom renovations: $313

Note: We still need to install new baseboard, which will be done by my papa shortly.

Completing Him Challenge: Admire Him

For the challenge this week, I am going to tell you how much I admire my husband.

If you know Herb, you know he is terrific. He is a great talker, good listener, and an even better arguer (wink, wink). He loves a good beer and an intense conversation about theology or politics. He can't turn down wings or sushi, and cries at chick flicks like 50 First Dates.

Herb is a hard worker. He values his job and appreciates his coworkers, and takes seriously his obligation to provide for our family. He does everything with 110%, including all the extra curricular stuff, like marching band and youth group. He loves teaching and building relationships with kids. I love watching him interact with them, too.

Herb is supportive. Whether it's my dorky crafting, my stress over the state of home cleanliness, our desperate attempt to save money, or my impatience during the wait, he's there.

He's pretty much the coolest person in the world, and if you don't know him, I hope for your sake someday you do!!

Completing Him: Pray for Your Husband

This week I commit to praying for Herb on a regular basis. Courtney has a very long list of suggested topics, which I will enjoy going through.

This is quite ironic considering I just spent 2 hours listening to Marc Driscoll preach on the topic of prayer. Good stuff people. I totally recommend this sermon series!

This week, I will have Herb's back in prayer (after all, as you can see in this picture, he's always got mine!).

Fun With Create A Critter

Completing Him: Until Death Do Us Part

The challenge this weeks is to reflect on our wedding. Very fitting since our anniversary is this week!

On June 24, 2006 I became Mrs. Herb Suereth.

Just 6 weeks after we graduated college,

and 6 months after our kidney transplant.

It was SUCH a crazy time!

The night before the wedding Herb's parents hosted a rehearsal dinner luau. I stayed with my bridesmaids at the Holiday Inn Express.

The morning of my wedding I woke up at 4 am and walked around the parking lot for a few hours. I was so nervous. I'll never forget my little sister got up with me and we walked together and talked about life. That was really special. Herb and I stayed at that same hotel the next night, too. One hotel, two sleepless nights (wink, wink).

What an awesome day that was. All our music friends helped out (clarinet choir, worship, special music, jazz trio, cover tunes with guitar), and Herb's boss brought the sound and lighting equipment (can you say bubbles and fog?!), a friend of my mom's made the cake, and our guest list was over 200. The best part? The ENTIRE wedding was $5500. (Okay, the best part was being married, the bargain was the second best part!)

We had the ceremony in the lobby of Grace Fellowship, the church where Herb grew up, and we attend now. The reception was there in the multipurpose room. We were married by our pastor from college, who related marriage to tuning a guitar in the message. Herb cried when I walked down the aisle, I cried when I said "...in sickness and in health." Our moms cried the entire time.

I came down the aisle to "Canon in D." Cheesy, but my lifelong dream. We exited the church to the Ghoti Hook rendition of "Walking On Sunshine." We danced to "The Nearness of You," sung by Lauren and played by Matt, Pat, and Paul. My dad and I danced to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

For our honeymoon we went to Disney World. The whole time we kept saying, "We really can't get out of this." The whole permanence of marriage was really setting in!! We still remind each other of that from time to time, and it is daunting but reassuring. To me, Herb is security. He is my rock.

(This is actually our 1 year anniversary - no digital camera the first time!)

Today I want to watch our wedding video, because I can't remember exactly what our vows were. Seems important, no?

I love this guy.

Sketchy Thursday 6.17

For this sketch I used pictures of our recent trip with our friend Matt & Erin to see the Baltimore Orioles. We had so much fun! And, the O's actually won!

The little cartoon is from fans they were handing out. I used Sure Cuts A Lot to make the O and the other part of the title. In case you're wondering, "Oh say can you see," is always a fun part of the National Anthem at an Orioles game because everyone yells "Oh!!!" at that part.

Nothing special about the second page, I just needed to get in some more pictures and "tie it" all together!

Completing Him Challenge: Captivate Him

In the Completing Him Challenge this week, I am going to reminsce about falling in love with Herb and then work this week on really captivating him.

Right now, the biggest obstacle Herb and I have is time. We are both running in different directions after work and on the weekends. He is doing an amazing job of making sure the time he is at home is just for me, even if it's just one evening a week. Ironically, this is very much like our dating days when we were both crazy busy music majors! I am going to try to be more focused on him when he's home, and not the million and one craft or cleaning projects always on my brain. Maybe we can go revisit some of the places were we spent our first summer - Nixon Park, Handles, Rail Trail. Oh, the ideas are flowing now!

Also, even though I don't have to work right now (summer vacation), I am going to think through my appearance as if I would have when we were dating. :)

Now, as required for the challenge this week, here is our dating story. (It's gonna be long, that's okay though, it's my blog, and my chance to reflect!!)

It was not exactly love at first sight for Herb and I. It was a hot day of marching band, and I noticed a sweaty guy sitting on the sidelines, sweating, in a black t-shirt, and jeans! My first thought was, "Well, I bet HE doesn't have a girlfriend!!" But, low and behold, I found out through the grapevine that he had a very serious one!

His first impression of me was "The girl who asked to many questions," from our friend Scott who was in the tuba line with me.

Yeah, not the best start.

But, by pulling each other out of the dating pool options, we were able to become very fast and close friends during the first year of college. We had all the same classes and ran around with the same group of people.

As you can see, in all the pictures of us with our friends in college, we were either beside each other in every picture or looking at each other! So funny!

Just before I left for the entire summer after our freshman year, I found out he was single, and it ROCKED my world. But alas, I was leaving the state for a few months, and of course, by the time I got home, Herb had found a new girlfriend. Oh well, I moved on.

That relationship didn't last very long, and the fall semester of my sophomore year was spent with Herb and I growing closer as friends and actually always trying to set each other up on dates. I read "I Gave Dating A Chance," (which Herb was also reading, unbeknownst to me), and realized the only one in the world I had ever met who was running the same pace as me spiritually was Herb.

So the next time I saw him I said, "Herb, don't take this the wrong way, but you're just the kind of guy I should marry."

"That's just great, everyone wants to marry me, but no one wants to date me!!" Herb cried in frustration.

Surprising myself I replied, "I never said I wouldn't date you."

It got really awkward for a few weeks, and I got to a point with God where I told Him I didn't want any boyfriend until it was His time. And suddenly, Herb and I were sitting at Denny's and he was giving me a bulleted list of all the reasons he was attracted to me, why we should date, and reasons I might have not to date him.

I was SO nervous when we started dating. In fact, I don't think I even realized we were dating for the first few dates. My nerves were a wreck, and I peed a lot whenever we were together. Finally, I looked at him and realized it was just my best friend Herb, who happened to be buying me dinner and thought I was beautiful. Oh man, that was a weird realization.

We dated from Jan-Sept 04 before taking a very emotional and hard break. Herb realized what was good for him by Thanksgiving, and we got back together in Dec 04. For the next year we got very close, and actually didn't say "I Love You," for the first time until Feb 05. I wanted to say it so much sooner, but I was waiting for him to be ready, and I'm glad that I did. It was so special when it happened, and I knew when he said love, he meant forever.

In March 05, Herb went into renal failure, so the next 9 months were spent bonding more during dialysis, me washing his hair in our tiny little apartments (he couldn't shower), working on lesson plans while visiting him the hospital, and making plans for our future, although through his sickness sometimes it seemed really bleak.

If you look close, you can see the dialysis tube outlined on his belly.

I will stop there, because I think next week I get to talk about our engagement and wedding.

Wow, it is really fun to think about those memories. I like my love story. I like my hubby even better!!

Bulletin Board Guitar Art

Last Sunday I shared about some new life I was giving to oversize bulletin boards. Today, I update you!

On Friday, my buddy Suzy and I hit some MAJOR yard sales, and one of my finds was a set of four wood tiles with random pictures of flowers and cats printed on it. AKA, really ugly. But, alas, besides the oversized bulletin boards, any kind of canvas or tile, especially in a set, comes home with me!!

A few weeks ago a picked up a sample pack of DCWV Rockstar pack (which broke down to 10 cents per sheet) at Big Lots. I bought it solely based on the cover sheet which I knew I just had to use in an art project somewhere.

I have been really struggling with how to make one piece of paper pop in design, and today I finally broke out of the box. I cut the paper in quarters, and Modge Podged it onto the cat tiles!

I had to touch up the edges with a little bit of black Sharpie and rubbed my black stamp on the edges.

Next, I had to figure out where to hang them. Of course, the bulletin board above the piano was just crying for something exciting. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out!!

Total cost for the guitar art was 20 cents. Not to mention the excitment of my hubby over having pictures of guitars in our house!!

Not only did I use my Cricut with SCAL, but I used up some paper and stickers I've been hoarding for 2 years. Yay!

Bulletin Board and Shelf Transformation

Lately I have had this addiction to picking up bulletin boards at Yard Sales. I got 2 recently, one for $1, and one for $3. To me, a bulletin board is endless possibilities!! I bought them without a plan of what I was going to do with them. Here's what I started with (they are both about the same size, 2'x3'):

The first one I covered with fabric I already had and have hung it above the piano. Not sure what else I am going to do with it. Currently, I have two prints hanging on it from Vol 25, but I'm thinking of doing something else down the road.

For the next bulletin board, I painted the frame and then covered the cork with the same brown and polka dot fabric. My intentions for the second bulletin board were to create some storage and picture display for my crafting area in the office. In addition to the bulletin board, I needed a shelf. I scooped up this horrendous country beauty at a yard sale for $1.

Step 1:

Give it a coat of spray paint (white to match the bulletin board). I am a crappy and impatient spray painter, and I'm okay with that, so don't judge my painting in the next picture!

Step 2:

Cover the heart and curvy junk! For this, I cut and stapled some old cork tiles (formerly hanging above my scrapping desk).

Step 3:

Wrap the new cork in the same brown and polka dot fabric.

Step 4:

Cut and staple cork to the top of the shelf so your scrap tools don't slide off the shelf and onto your projects!!

Step 5:

Hang the shelf and bulletin board. Clutter with pictures of your loved ones. (And ignore the large hold in the wall that needs patched!!)

I just love the look of controlled chaotic pictures.

Big exciting news in the DIY/Crafty world!!

This layout won me a nice little prize pack from the Scrap Fit Challenge, sponsored by Scrapbook Circle. I was SUPER excited to get selected as a layout winner last week, and even more excited when this beautiful package of goodies arrived on my door step today.

All kinds of papers, embellishments, thickers, and my personal fave, rhinestones in the shape of little flowers!! Also loving that everything is coordinated, but I know I will get several layouts out of this package. Thanks Scrap Fit, Scrapbook Circle, and Suzy, for turning me onto the great world of scrappy challenges!

Nursery Wall Art for Roman

My very far away friend, Lauren, will be welcoming baby Roman to the world in July. When Lauren sent a picture of her crib bedding, I asked her if she like the numbers behind the crib. She said yes, but unfortunately, they were over $200. This was my cue for crafting!!

I started with 9 12"x12" canvases that I scored for 1.49 a piece at Christmas Tree Shops. They had a Hollywood and movie pictures on them. I used leftover paint from the nursery and painted the top and sides black.

After they dried, I used my Cricut and scrapbook paper I already had to create the design for each tile. We altered numbers and fonts a bit. Of course we had to incorporate one telephone key for all the texting that Mama Becker does, and a Roman numeral for obvious reasons! My friend Suzy was kind enough to cut the 10 inch circle for me (since I just have the baby cricut). I inked the edges of each number and sheet of paper in black.

I used Modge Podge to attach each layer (first the 12x12 paper, then the number), and then put 2 coats of Modge Podge on top of each tile. Of course, sometimes the paper didn't line up exactly with the canvas, so when the modge podge dried, I used a craft knife to trim the edges, and then rubbed the edges with a black stamp pad.

The total cost of the project was $22.00!!! Not to mention they were the PERFECT size for using flat rate shipping to Hawaii. Technically, the shipping cost 2 times at much as the entire project. But so worth it!

Living Room Renovation Revealed

Ah, nesting. This is a project that has taken us 3 years to get around to doing, and now that it is finished, I can't believe we didn't do this first! Having a comfortable living room is so important to making our house feel like home. Our priorities were to have neutral walls, light and air feeling, and nice cozy flooring. AND on a budget. I think I finally have a cohesive color scheme on the main level and into the hallway. Tans, aquas, chocolate browns, white, and a touch of green.

As always, I have to brag about the bargains in this room. But yes, they do add up. I didn't really go out and buy anything specifically for this room recently, it's all stuff we've been accumulating over the last four years.

Without further adeu, the "Before" Pictures. Oversized furniture, ugly walls.

The living room when we first moved in...aka, "Work With What Ya Got" Yellow walls, red curtains,green couch, blue/red/green/yellow couch. Yes, it all matched, but no, it was NOT my style.

Still trying to work with it. I tried for a while to convince myself that touches of aqua was a contrast to yellow, so it would all be okay. WRONG!

Herb testing his hand a laying tile. He did a GREAT job! It is faux slate with a little bit of blue and brown.

And the afters. I am THRILLED.

The armoire is from Craigslist, and it goes with our bedroom suite. Like the use of the yard sale candles? And check out that GREAT slate! The small table is from Ross ($20). The lamp and shade are from Ollies (around $15 together). The mirror was from Big Lots ($5). Coat hooks from Christmas Tree Shops ($5).

I'm not convinced about the placement of the rocker and the leather sofa together, which makes the lamp interfere with the painting. Sofa and throw were from Big Lots ($400, $15), pillows are from Ross ($3-4 each), coffee table from Jocelyn, rocker from Dad, basket on coffee table from Lauren, remote holder from Salvation Army ($1). The beach painting was a wedding gift to my parents 28 years ago, painted by my cousin's husband, the smaller frame has a quote from Kirlands ($15).

We removed the half wall between the living room and the stairs, which created a heating vent issue. We're not happy with having three vents cluttered up like that, but we don't really have options right now. It helps that we ran the carpet all the way to the stairs (Dad's idea), and spray painted all the vents the same color. The shelves and frames were a wedding gift, the white shelves are from when I was a kid (built by my dad), the basket on the shelf was made by my mom, my super cheap lamp shade ($0.50, recovered), silver lamp from Wal-Mart clearance ($5), and the white yard sale dish. Saving all this money gives me more money for scrapbooking, which you can see I do a lot of! The vase on the floor was a gift from Lauren for being in her wedding, and the peacock feathers are from the farmshow ($3). And yes, I am going to continue the paint color up the stairs eventually. For now, deal with it.

The curtains are courtesy of my sewing machine and $18 of fabric from Wal Mart. I wish they were a little thicker, but it was my first attempt at curtains (2 years ago), and I was feeling cheap. The aqua clock is from Christmas Tree Shops ($5). The loveseat was free from my mom, and the slip cover is from Big Lots ($30). All the floor lamps we got at Wal-Mart during college, lol.

And finally the carpet is called "Footloose Cocoa Frieze." We got it for $2/foot (including awesome paddding) at Carpet Mart with $1 installation. The paint color is from Lowes, and it is called Fioli Antique Lace.

It feels SOOO good to have this room completed. I am proud to say we did all the work ourselves, except for laying the carpet. Time to go sit on the floor and watch a movie! After all, it is free redbox day!!

DIY Lamshades

Before I break into the lampshades, here are some Roman Numerals I have been meaning to make for the dining room. It is the year we got married.

I've been getting a little mod-podge happy these days. It started with some nursery art for my friend Lauren (watch for that post!!).

Anyway, I decided to modge podge a lampshade. I cut 2 pieces of scrapbook paper into 2"x8" strips and went to town layering them on the lampshade. I finished it off with some extra brown ribbon I had lying around.

The next project came for the piano. The silver lamp that was on the piano, now donning it's new shade, was moved to the living room. On the piano, I put two lamps that use to be on our nightstands before our big bedroom renovation a year ago. I was planning to use these cream lamps in the nursery, but the cream just doesn't jive with the black and white them I have going on.

I used brown taffeta to cover the shades with hot glue. The ribbon is also hot glued on - strategically to hide some mistakes, too! Haha.

I am digging the symmetry on top of the piano. I am so use to seeing one center light.

Bathroom Reno

Here's some things Herb and I have been doing in the bathroom during the blizzard. We REALLY need a new floor (it is leaking), which will be coming hopefully in the next week or so. In the meantime, here are some money saving things we did to give it a facelift...

Before:

Notice the tiny little corner cabinet. Sure, it's great for storing towels or plungers, but it is ugly, made out of paneling, and cramping the already small floor plan of the tiny bathroom.

Nothing too major about the vanity. When we moved in there was a shelf and a towel bar to the left of the sink, making it really tight.

This also doesn't look too shabby. UNTIL we added more storage above the toilet with a cabinet and moved the towel bar. Also, notice the dated medicine cabinet (also the only light supply).

So, here's where we are at now. We are planning on a black and white checkered floor (think 50s diner). So, the cabinet became black and got a new silver knob (which matches the medicine and toilet cabinets).

Next, I took my little dremel multi max tool (awesome) and sawed the top off of the medicine cabinet so now it has a stright crown moulding piece at the top instead of curvy yucky stuff. Also, how do you like my toilet paper art? :)

And finally, Herb went at the terrible corner cabinet today. Obviously the empty area still needs primed and painted (as does all the white paneling).

I told Herb to rip up the baseboard too, and I'm glad I did because it turned out to be STYROFOAM!

I think I will be getting a plain white shower curtain or something classy like damask. Also, we would like to remove the lighting from the medicine cabinet and install more normal looking ones above the mirror.

Sketchy Thursday 2.11

When I saw this sketch this morning, I knew EXACTLY which pictures I wanted to use from Christmas. My brother recently invest in a Canon Rebel camera and has is notorious for taking series shots. I loved this of my mom and step dad at Christmas! We surprised them with Jeff Dunham tickets and a night in State College.

My pictures were a little too big (and already printed) to squeeze on one page, so I made my layout double.

I used SCAL and the paper is Very Merry Classics from American Tradition Designs. I picked up 20 sheets for $2.00 at Big Lots a long time ago (3 years?). I am happy to say there are only 2 sheets remaining (I have a lot of it away!).

Oh how I am LOVING the blizzard we are getting slammed with today. Cuddling, TV, pancakes, scrapbooking, and coming soon, movies! I am glad Herb was able to stay home today, too! He got a new guitar that he is trying out while I scrap. Here's what I'm working on today.

New blog I found, All About Me, is where you scrap about your life (I think). The challenge was to create a layout about your normal day. I used some great paper I just found at Big Lots, my cricut, and the mini monogram cartridge. I really wish I would have used a darker paper for the letters. By the time I got them glued on I saw how badly the yellow blended in, so I had to ink them up.

The next layout is for Sketchy Thursday. Here is the layout challenge:

Here is my version. I used the same paper pack from Big Lots, SCAL, cricut. This was MY FIRST time trying out inking the edge of paper, and I think I went a little crazy on it. But it was fun. I love the look it gives!! However, I am a little sloppy. What's the best way to ink an edge if you can't get it in the pad? (Like my letters and brace) I just used my finger, but then it got too thick at spots.

First we have Creative Scrappers 89. For this layout I used "Santas Sleigh" font on my SCAL and Cricut. The ribbon is from an old wedding invitation I ripped apart (thanks, Molly), and the papers are from a huge pack I got at Tuesday Morning for $5 (not sure the brand). The same papers are used for both layouts.

This layout from Sketchy Thursday kicked my butt. I spent way too long on the border under the pictures for the amount of actual coolness the border has. I am having a lot of problems getting SCAL to always cut what it actually shows on the screen. And then it was freezing...eh. In all fairness, it was my first attempt at using SCAL to create a border like that. There must be a bigger learning curve than I thought.

Creative Scrappers Sketch 88

Today I discovered a new webiste, Creative Scrappers, again, found through Scrappin' with Suzy.

Not loving this layout, and honestly couldn't tell you where the papers are from (probably the dollar store 2 years ago!). Used my Cricut with George cartridge for the stars.

Valentine's Day Wreath

This is my "green" valentine's day wreath. Green, because I started with reused, repurposed items, and a green styrofoam wreath. The fuzzy fabric came from my good buddy Jess, the bow came from my "live" Christmas wreath that died this week, and the stryrofoam wreath came from The Dollar Tree for, you guessed it, $1.

To begin, cut the fabric in 2-3 inch strips. Hot glue one end to wreath, and start wrapping.

Beware, this fuzzy fabric sheds...a lot! My floor afterward.

I added the bow to the bottom of the wreath using wire. It wasn't quite the look I was going for, so I put it to the side.

When the bow was on the side of the wreath, because if its size, the wreath kept leaning to the right. I know the bow is disproportionately too large for the size of the wreath...but hey for $1, I can live with it for the next month! Anyway, I twisted the wire on the bow and rehung the wreath. I like the bow on the top like this because it covers the wreath hanger on the door now!

Not my most favorite thing I've ever hung on my door, but it sure will do for now!

Sketchy Thursday 1.21

The challenge for Sketchy Thursday this week involved a layout with circles. Here is my take on that sketch. I added a few more pictures, and my title is more like journaling. Once again, I used DCWV glitter pack (FYI...3 layouts from 1 12x12 piece!!), SCAL, Cricut, and cardstock. All of these future baby album pictures are in black, white, and red because I wanted to stay gender neutral. Ironically, those are the colors of the nursery, too! :)

Scrap Fit Lift - WO 12

My first scrap blog post! This blog is dedicated to all the things I am doing to keep myself busy for now...while waiting for our adoption to happen. Anyway, this layout is for ScrapFit Workout 12 - lift a previous layout. The "original" layout is from Stephanie, posted in Sept 09 on the Scrapfit Blog.

For my layout, I used DCWV glitter stack, some solid colored card stock, and Cricut and SCAL.
